GUG Launch Announcement

We’re delighted to formally announce the upcoming launch of GUG, the infinite creature battler.

The demo version of GUG will be showcased at Gamescom on the 21st-25th August, in Cologne, Germany. GUG’s main launch will be this winter.

What is GUG?

  1. You suggest a short prompt, one or two words
  2. A gug is generated, whose name, picture and powers are entirely unique
  3. You fight other gugs, attempting to counter them with your gug’s designs
  4. You earn currency which you spend on further gug upgrades
  5. You have a guggin’ good time!

Apparently, 'Handkerchief' creates 'Mucosniff'

Entirely Unique?

Yup. Each gug’s power is generated through machine learning (and a fair amount of alchemy) and rewrites the game’s code! Even we don’t know what will happen when you enter your prompt.

Got Examples?

Here’s three very different gugs from the prompts 'Poisonous Snake', 'Vampire Bat' and 'Juice'.

Three mighty fine gugs

Tell me about the fighting!

Glad you asked. Each turn you choose where to position your collection of gugs.

Empty columns will earn you currency to spend in the shop, whilst the back row allows gugs to heal up.

But you really need to figure out how to counter the swarm of angry gugs attacking you, placing your gugs in the best spots to maximize their unique powers.

Game designer Marlon built a 'Fruit Gang'. Ask him why.

I’ll be at Gamescom, where is GUG?

We’re in the Indie Hall, 10.2, Aisle F. Come play the demo, grab some stickers and meet the scrambled brains behind the making of GUG.

I can’t make Gamescom, what do I do next?

How convenient of you to ask, because we’re all agug to tell you about our Steam page where you can wishlist GUG. This means you’ll get notified when we drop the demo on Steam and also when we launch the game, this coming winter.

There’s also more details on gameplay, screenshots and a video trailer.

Go on! Do it now, while you remember.

Can I find out more about the makers of GUG?

We’re Martian Lawyers Club, a collective of game developers, designers, and researchers. We all get slightly overexcited by new and experimental game technology.

Right now we're developing games that offer the freedom of choice traditionally found only in tabletop role-playing games.

GUG is the world’s first infinite gug machine. GUG can be played, broken, or watched. GUG will not sit still when you leave it alone and it evolves when played. At any one point in time, no one can tell where or when GUG will be, but in the universe of GUG there is one constant we can hold on to: there will be millions of gugs.
